The same men who had just fought for that no one in the world would never know the indignity, the servitude and the law of the strongest, found intact on the continent the same rules against which they had fought ...
In Madagascar, in Algeria, the men of Africa had risen, demanding to live as men too. Once more they were reminded that freedom, reconquered, was not theirs. The order was re-established, by cannons, by raids, executions, the curfew, the napalm, the camps. Nothing had changed in the means, because nothing had changed in essence. Truly the history is not over, but does the history ever end ?
Gaping Face
Faces of tears and suffering. Faces of rhythms and dances. Faces of harmony reflected in the waters, tomorrow matrix of beauty. Faces of sweat wiped on the foreheads. Faces of Africa innumerable and yet one, diverse and yet fraternal. My forgotten face will be blurred, which I must go, patiently, seeking the features. My face which I need to ask for to the sunburned stones. To the bronze, the wood, the leather worked by black or brown hands. To the multiplied memory of the medas and the griots. To the shade of the forest. To the desert on fire. To the stifled sobs of the slaves. To the trumpet of victory. To liberty even more beautiful than liberation. My face will be dense.

By recovering their independence, the countries of Africa and Asia had broken the obstacle separating them from themselves. They had at last an identity, but not yet a face, since at length, methodically, they had been trained to forget themselves and sometimes to scorn themselves. Free and independent, what for? If not first, to externalize ourself. The first task of freedom, more often conquered than attempted, is to go to the long quest for the past, because it weighs with all its weight on the present and it's on it that the future is grafted. Quest first at home, of course, in what remains of the past, in the objects made by our hands, in the remains of our destroyed cities forgotten, our stones, our monuments, in our memories ... But also quest at the adversary home, in the cynic or distracted confessions of his books. In the barely arranged truth of his films, in all the documents, where so often, he has tried to disguise us, but of which it's so easy to pierce the masks, to finally reach the truth, our truth.
Tame the Rhythm
Tame the Rhythm
We now know that the freedom of Africa is inescapable. We know that this earth again will be our. That it already is to the measure of our rhythms and our long thirst and our hopes. We know that once again, she will be settled again with herself and that we men of Africa will tame the waters, the airs and the fire ... And see : we already tame the demons !
Forgotten Prophecy

In Monte Cassino, there are 400 European tombs and 2900 African tombs. African dead fallen for the freedom of others. Howling brown or tanned or black, thrown against the muzzle of the guns, as a derisory challenge. A rhythm of tamtam and bush inhabited by the sun. Broken in the exile of the gray skies, to give back to others, the taste of living and forgetting.
Oh, my son with a bronze body, my ray of sunshine son. Tomorrow the school will open for you. Oh my son with a bronze heart. Tomorrow you will learn all that gives men power, power, not to enslave men : Power to banish swamp fever. Power to force the earth to make men strong. You will be, oh my son, the master of the steels that pierce the clouds up there. The master of the thunder planes. You will be, oh my son with a bronze heart, my sunbeam son. You will be the master of the thousand-page books.
